SMARTLINK DAY OF RIVALS: Johns Hopkins' Senior Roommates, a look back

If you're familiar with Inside Lacrosse Magazine, you've probably come across a feature in the Freestyle section called "Roommates." It all started two years ago when we sent surveys to a bunch of schools and Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins sent us back straight gold. Notre Dame's responses turned into last year's blog, one of the greatest additions to the history of mankind IL has ever made, and Hopkins' responses gave a glimpse into the lives of four studs at the D1 level.

I don't know whether Sam DeVore, Steve Boyle, Mike Kimmel and Mike Powers still live together, but they did at one point, and in the spirit of rivalry, here's a look back at the now senior stars dorm room two years ago.

Who...

Is the messiest?

Kimmel: Powers. You can't even see an inch of carpet in his room because it is covered with dirty clothes that he calls his wardrobe.

Powers: I am definitely the messiest, without a doubt.

DeVore: Powers

Boyle: Powers

Stays up the latest?

Kimmel: Powers. I'm convinced that he's nocturnal. I honestly have never seen him go to bed before 3 a.m., even if we have to be up early for something. Boyle loves naps.

Powers: Me. My roommates wonder if I even sleep. Boyle is in bed at like 9:30. He's always yelling at us to keep the noise down.

DeVore: Powers. Always playing his guy in Madden

Boyle: Powers. I'm not sure he even sleeps

Has the most DVDs?

Kimmel: DeVore and Powers both have a solid DVD collection. Boyle and I own one or two DVDs between the two of us.

Powers: Either me or Sam, but we really don't have a big DVD selection.

DeVore: Me. But Powers is always trying to take them.

Boyle: Kimmel. He loves watching game film of himself.

Has friends over the most?

Kimmel: DeVore. Everyone gets along with Sam.

Powers: Sam. He's a ladies man.

DeVore: Kimmel. They come to listen to his poetry.

Boyle: DeVore. Ladies dig the guitar, but Kimmel has newfound confidence because he got his braces off last summer.

Takes the longest showers?

Kimmel: Me. I take naps in the shower. We took a stool that we were supposed to use for eating and put it in the shower as a seat. It's quite comfortable.

Powers: Steve. Whenever I wake up to shower there seems to be no hot water

DeVore: Kimmel. He sits on a chair that used to be in our living room.

Boyle: Myself or Kimmel, but he is always late for stuff.

Eats the weirdest things?

Kimmel: Me. I put mayo on just about everything.

Powers: Kimmel. We kind of all eat the same stuff, but he eats the weirdest mix.

DeVore: Kimmel. Who puts mayonnaise on egg rolls?

Boyle: Kimmel. I'm pretty sure he eats mayonnaise with his cereal he likes it so much.

Breaks things in the room most often?

Kimmel: Me or Powers. We are both clumsy at times.

Powers: Kimmel broke the remote one time, so we couldn't watch TV for like two weeks.

DeVore: Kimmel. He managed to break the toilet paper holder.

Boyle: Everyone does thier fair share, but Kimmel never fixes anything.

Fixes stuff in the room most often?

Kimmel: DeVore is definitely the handiest out of the group

Powers: No one. Once it's broken, that's it.

DeVore: Once it's broken, that's it.

Boyle: Nobody really, they shut off our cable a couple weeks ago and we still haven't gotten it fixed.

Is the best cook?

Kimmel: Powers. He makes great egg sandwiches.

Powers: Me. But I can only make eggs. That's about as far as the cooking goes for the room.

DeVore: Powers. Great eggs.

Boyle: Powers. He makes a mean egg sandwich.

Is the worst cook?

Kimmel: Me. I only know how to use a microwave. I can't even make an egg.

Powers: Kimmel. The only thing he knows how to use is the microwave.

DeVore: Kimmel. Doesn't know how to cook eggs!

Boyle: Kimmel. I'm not sure he even knows how to use the microwave.

Recognition Displays Added in Newton H. White Athletic Center

Further Enhancements to Include Trophy Cases for all 24 Varsity Teams at JHU

Johns Hopkins University Director of Athletics Tom Calder announced today the completion of the first phase of a three-phase project that will give a complete facelift to the Newton H. White Athletic Center. The completed first phase includes two free-standing structions honoring the University's Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholars. Coupled with the earlier completion of the department's All-America display, this initial stage of the project was funded completely by private donations at a cost of nearly $120,000.

The second phase scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2010-2011 academic year, will include trophy display cases for each of Johns Hopkins' 24 intercollegiate sports, a current champions display case and upgraded lighting in the Athletic Center lobby. The total cost for this phase is $125,000 and will also be completely funded through private donations.

The overall project in the Newton H. White Athletic Center has several purposes. First, it recongizes the accomplishments and individual achievements of today's teams and student-athletes, while making the University's collective memory of past successes more alive for alumin, parents and potential students. Second, it enhances the overall appeal of Johns Hopkins to potential recruits while demonstrating the importance and commitment the administration has placed on athletics.

Senior Student Athletes Attend CHAMPS Life Skills "Hands On" Etiquette Dinner

Johns Hopkins senior student-athletes were recently invited to the athletic department's first Etiquette Dinner. The event, hosted by "Mom Nonnie" from Etiquette Plus, was a night of dining and etiquette adventures all in an effort to enhance the life skills of JHU's student-athletes. The students were greeted as they checked in, had a chance to mingle with fellow student-athletes all before Nonnie Owens began to walk them through a formal dining experience.

Owens began with tips on the cocktail hour and how to manage holding a drink, naking and plate of appetizers while at the same time being able to carry on a meaningful conversation with fellow guests. Conversation turned into the serving on the first course, a salad, where seniors were taught the differences between European Continental style and American Zig Zag. Everyone struggled with the European style and were back to American Zig Zag by the end of the course. The professional servers cleared their plates once the silverware was placed properly across the plate.

Many questions and comments continued as dinner and dessert were served. Students were curious as to how to eat soup if it was served, how to eat spaghetti, where to put the napkin if you leave the table. Mom Nonnie mingled throughout the room giving advice, making corrections and casually talking with our students.

The event was made possible by the CHAMPS Life Skills program; an NCAA sponsored initiative that was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education.

The Johns Hopkins Department of Athletics will continue to focus on additional programming for other classes and, based on feedback from the senior class, mom Nonnie will be back in 2011

Tutoring by former Ravens kicker in summer pays off for Blue Jays' Lachman


Matt Stover had a hand in this. Or a foot.Johns Hopkins plays in the NCAA Division III football quarterfinals Saturday, in part because its kicker studied last summer with Stover, the former Ravens great.That kicker, Alex Lachman, booted a last-second, game-winning 43-yard field goal last week in Hopkins' 31-29 playoff victory over Thomas More.The win sends the Blue Jays (10-2) to Dover, Del., to face Wesley (12-0) at noon. It's the third straight postseason road game for Hopkins, which has scored back-to-back victories over previously undefeated teams."We're playing about as well as we can play now," coach Jim Margraff said. "Wesley is one of the [Division III] superpowers, so we'll have to fight for every inch."If we're still around in the fourth quarter, we'll find a way to win."Hopkins would be hard-pressed to match last week's finish. Trailing by two points with 51 seconds left, the Jays marched 44 yards to set up the winning kick by Lachman, a junior who punched it through with room to spare."He [Lachman] crushed it," Margraff said."That ball would have been good from 60 yards."The kick would have done Stover proud. The NFL's fifth all-time scorer, Stover spent time with Lachman in August, critiquing his style and offering tips on a muggy day at McDonogh School.On Wednesday, when he learned of Lachman's heroics from a Baltimore Sun reporter, Stover was elated."Fantastic!" he said. "That's a huge kick. When you see a guy like Alex, whom you've invested in, who has worked hard and who can help his team win ... that's what it's all about."Margraff had sought Stover's help, as their daughters, both McDonogh students, are friends. Stover, now with the Indianapolis Colts, lives in Cockeysville."Matt and I are car-pool daddies, and he offered to help out," Margraff said."Alex is a terrific kicker, but we haven't really coached him at all [at Hopkins]."Who better to tutor Lachman than the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history?"He [Stover] helped a lot," said Lachman, a political science major from Livingston, N.J. "He changed my set-up. I used to take a wider angle on my approach, but he narrowed it some."Stover called Lachman "a very attentive and coachable kid" who was anxious to hone his skills."I tweaked his technique here and there," he said. "I told him that it's nerve-wracking to be a kicker, and that just because you're nervous doesn't mean you're not a good one."I taught him how to be his own coach, and how to gain confidence."The rest is history.Last week, as he readied to kick with one second left in the game, Lachman said he felt "a weird sense of calm. As soon as I kicked it, I knew it was good. I was celebrating before it went through [the uprights]."It was Lachman's 16th field goal in 21 attempts and his longest boot this year.On the sideline, teammates strained to look - or closed their eyes."I couldn't watch the kick," defensive end and co-captain Glenn Rocca said. "I knew he'd make it, but I turned away. It just felt like the right thing for me to do - and it worked.""I trusted Alex to make it, I really did," said Dan Crowley, Hopkins' star receiver."He's not that big a guy [6-feet, 200 pounds], but his leg is unbelievably strong. Put the ball anywhere under 50 yards and I trust him. Attempting that kick was definitely better than trying a 'Hail Mary' pass."Lachman called the kick payback for his having botched a last-ditch 38-yard attempt against Ursinus in October that cost Hopkins a victory."This was the ultimate redemption," he said.Afterward, he was buried on the field beneath an avalanche of Blue Jays, everyone but the coach who was tangled up on the sideline."My head set was tied to my field pass and I couldn't get it off," Margraff said. "But watching these guys pile up was a beautiful thing. For them to be that cool and collected on the last drive was a testament to what this team has done all year."The ripple effect of Hopkins' victory began quickly. As he trotted to the jubilant locker room, Margraff said, "my cell phone started binging and bonging like crazy. I must have had 40 text messages before I got inside."One note, from a 60-year-old Hopkins' alumnus, especially touched him."The man said he was listening to the game [on the Internet] and that he had tears in his eyes when the kick sailed through the uprights," Margraff said.Stover, meanwhile, is tickled at the success of his protege."Am I proud of Alex? More than proud," Stover said. "But I'm not surprised."I knew he had it in him."

The Greatest Weekend in Hopkins Athletics History!

Arguably the greatest weekend (certainly one of the busiest) in Hopkins athletics history will take place this coming weekend with several home events on the schedule. The support our athletes have shown to other teams at JHU has always been remarkable and I would like to personally invite you to attend one or more of the many events this weekend. Here are some of the home highlights. Get out and support your fellow Blue Jays - and be sure to wear only black and blue.

• Five JHU teams will participate in the NCAA Playoffs this weekend, including the women's soccer team, which will host the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 on Saturday and Sunday. That's right, two wins and the Blue Jays are going to soccer's final four. 7th-ranked JHU hosts 12th-ranked Middlebury at 2:30 pm on Sunday. A win there and JHU will play in the national quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 pm. All games at Homewood Field.

• The JHU men's basketball team opens the 2009-10 season at home on Friday night with a game against local rival Stevenson. This is the first game in the Pride of Maryland Tournament, which will continue on Saturday and Sunday at Goucher. Stevenson students are expected to attend en masse - don't let them out-number you!

• Women's basketball opens the season at home on Saturday and Sunday with their annual season-opening tournament. The Blue Jays host Wheaton (MA) at 1 pm on Saturday in Goldfarb Gymnasium with action continuing on Sunday afternoon.

• The Blue Jay football team will play at Hampden-Sydney at noon on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. JHU is 8-2 and won the Centennial Conference Championship to earn a bid to the playoffs.

• The second-ranked JHU women's cross country team will participate in the NCAA Championships in Ohio on Saturday. JHU is among the teams expected to compete for the national championship. The Blue Jay men's cross country team will also have an individual participant at the NCAAs.

• The men's soccer team will take its shot at the team of the decade - Messiah - when the Blue Jays take on the host Falcons at 5 pm on Saturday in the Sweet 16. A win there and JHU will play in the national quarterfinals on Sunday at 6 pm (also at Messiah). Like the women, the men are two wins from soccer's final four.

• The water polo team goes for its first-ever Eastern Championship at MIT this weekend.

• Wrestling continues its early-season tournament run with a trip to Oneonta, NY to take part in the prestigious Red Dragon Open.
